Discover the Wonders of Southwestern Australia
A 10-day trip across Southwestern Australia. With landscapes, incredible beaches, and unique attractions.
My name is Matthew Finch. I am an adventure seeker who recently embarked on a ten-day, 1,913 kilometre journey across Southwestern Australia. With stunning landscapes, incredible beaches, and unique attractions, this road trip was a blend of discovery, relaxation, and unforgettable moments.
Here’s a day-by-day overview of the trip:
Day 1: Perth to Hyden
Starting in Perth, our first leg took us 331 km to Hyden, home to the iconic Wave Rock. Driving through the outback was a surreal experience, with the striking orange soil setting the tone for the journey ahead. The scale of Wave Rock itself left me in awe. It’s a perfect first stop for anyone starting their Southwestern Australia adventure.
Day 2: Hyden to Esperance
The drive to Esperance covered 362 km, with a halfway stop at Lake Camm which is a salt lake. We had a lot of fun walking onto the salt flats there. That night ee stayed at Bathers Paradise Caravan Park, where I enjoyed a run along the scenic esplanade. It was the perfect way to take in the beauty of Esperance.
Day 3: Esperance to Lucky Bay
This shorter drive of 62 km brought us to Lucky Bay, where we enjoyed a lunch overlooking the turquoise waters. Later, we went to Frenchman Peak which is an amazing look out to Cape Le Grand National Park for sunset.
We stayed the night at Dunns Eco Park, a friendly campsite with a welcoming atmosphere.
Pro tip: You also can stay at Lucky bay but you have to book in advance. I also recommend getting a multi-pass for the national parks. It’s worth it because there’s so much to explore!
Day 4: Lucky Bay to Fitzgerald
The day began with a sunrise visit to Hellfire Beach, which might just be the nicest beach I’ve ever seen. From there, we drove 306 km to Fitzgerald Free Camping. The drone photo I captured of Hellfire Beach perfectly encapsulates its beauty.
Day 5: Fitzgerald to Parryville
This 304 km drive included incredible stops at the Granite Skywalk at Castle Rock, the Gap, and Natural Bridge. We also visited Elephant Rocks and Green Pools, both must-see locations for their unique landscapes and serene settings. We ended the day at Boat Harbour Camp, a peaceful retreat near Parryville.
Day 6: Parryville to Warren National Park
Covering 169 km, this leg began with a visit to the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk, an awe-inspiring experience amidst towering trees. Next, we ventured to Windy Harbour to see the Window at Point d’Entrecasteaux and witnessed a stunning sunset atop Mount Chudalup. The day concluded at Warren Camp in Warren National Park, surrounded by nature’s tranquillity.
Day 7: Warren National Park to Redgate Beach
The journey continued for 140 km, starting with Beedelup Falls and a sighting of wild kangaroos at Beedelup. There were loads of kangaroos there! We then visited the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. To view the grounds there, you are required to pay $7.50 each, but if you want to go up the lighthouse you need to pay $21. The Jewel Cave Tour was another highlight, showcasing mesmerising underground formations. We recommend booking the tour in advance.
We ended the day with a sunset at Hamelin Bay and stayed overnight at Redgate Beach.
Day 8: Redgate Beach to Dunsborough Lakes Holiday Resort
A shorter drive of 58 km led us to Margaret River, where we hired a two-man sea kayak for a scenic paddle. The day ended with a magnificent sunset at Sugarloaf Rock. We finished the day at Dunsborough Lakes Holiday Resort, which is a very nice campsite. If you ask for an end plot you can even spend the night with the Kangaroos!
Day 9: Dunsborough Lakes Holiday Resort to Peppermint Grove Beach Holiday Park
I started the day with a run along the esplanade and enjoyed stunning beach views. We then visited the Natural Aquarium which is a nice natural swimming hole which is just outside Yallingup. After that, we stopped at Canal Rocks, then we went to the famous Busselton Jetty which is a very long walk but worth it for the views. We finished the day at Peppermint Grove Beach Holiday Park.
Day 10: Peppermint Grove Beach Holiday Park to Perth
On our final day, we travelled 203 km back to Perth, with a stop at the Dolphin Discovery Centre in Bunbury. It was a fitting end to an incredible journey, combining education, marine life, and the chance to reflect on the adventure.
