Road trip Australia’s most iconic highway

America has Route 66, New Zealand has the Forgotten World Highway, and we have the Pacific Coast Highway. While the Pacific Coast Highway route is 780 kilometres, you can capture the best of it on an Australian road trip from Sydney to Byron Bay.

Picking up your motorhome rental in Sydney, top attractions to visit include hiking in Bouddi National Park, watersports at Lake Macquarie, and the sand dunes at Worimi Conservation Lands near Port Stephens. For wine aficionados, travel inland to the world-renowned vineyards of the Hunter Valley.

Further north, Dorrigo National Park is an unsung hero close to Coffs Harbour. Over 60 million years old, Dorrigo is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests and a perfect place to regain perspective on what’s important in life.

If you time your arrival into Byron Bay just right, you can catch one of their famous annual events. Like Bluesfest, and the Byron Bay Film Festival.

Tour the best of New South Wales

New South Wales is jam-packed with mesmerising attractions. Home to one of the world’s most famous beaches – Bondi - the iconic Sydney Opera House, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains, it’s a region passionate about sharing its spoils.

A great road trip around New South Wales includes the state’s renowned attractions but goes beyond them, too. For experience seekers, a hike (or ski) at the Snowy Mountains, an adventure to the otherworldly landscapes of Mungo National Park, or an outback away-from-it-all adventure at Pilliga Forest is the break from routine you’ve been craving.

If you’re flying into Sydney, you’ll love how close our Sydney motorhome branch is, allowing you to get on the road in record time. We even offer a hassle-free complimentary airport shuttle.

The road less travelled: Sydney to Melbourne

With close to 40 flights per day between Sydney and Melbourne, the 1,200-kilometre coastal route can be considered the Australian road less travelled. Airline passengers are missing out on the beauty of Jervis Bay, the cultural and natural wonders of Eurobodalla National Park, and bypassing Gippland’s gems.

To road trip from Sydney to Melbourne is to say yes to slow travel over shortcuts. Watching dolphins frolic off the coast of Huskisson Bay, enjoying the sunrise at Narooma’s Glassrocks, and slurping oysters at Pambula Lake wholly encourage you to pause and be present.

And there’s still Gippsland, where you can sample local goodies at the farmer’s markets, surf or swim at Ninety Mile Beach, and even go koala watching on Raymond Island. Taking a road trip between Sydney and Melbourne is giving yourself the greatest gift of all: time.

Explore Victoria’s enchanting East Coast

Whether you’re a lucky resident of Victoria or heading to the state for the first time, you’ll soon notice everything along the East Coast is mesmerising!

For wonderful wildlife encounters, you don’t need to drive far from our Melbourne motorhome branch. First, meet the echidnas and wallabies on the Mornington Peninsula. Then drive to Phillip Island to gaze adoringly waddling fairy penguins, eucalyptus-munching koalas, and lolling seals.

There are enticing natural wonders, too. At mainland Australia’s southernmost point, Wilsons Promontory’s diverse ecosystem includes pristine beaches (including the famous Squeaky Beach), dense mangroves, and temperate rainforests. After exploring on foot, grab a snorkel to explore the underwater residents in Victoria’s largest marine park.

Further north, enjoy watersports at Lakes Entrance and the impressive Buchanan Caves. Be sure to save time to visit the Koala Sanctuary on Raymond Island.

Take a circuit of Victoria’s most famous routes: the Great Ocean Road & the Grampians

Victoria has two legendary driving routes that join to make a perfect Australian road trip circuit. There’s the legendary Great Ocean Road with its landmark Twelve Apostles geological formations, the surfer towns of Torquay and Apollo Bay, and the charming old-world town of Port Fairy. Tower Hill

From Port Fairy drive inland towards the Grampians, stopping to meet the Australian critters at the Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve en route. The UNESCO World heritage-listed Grampians are not only impressive due to their sandstone mountains, widespread wildflowers, and native wildlife but also for their significant Aboriginal heritage. The ancient rock art at Bilimina Shelter is a Grampians highlight.

Take a slow journey from Adelaide to Melbourne

While driving from Adelaide to Melbourne (or vice versa) is possible in eight hours, your only highlight would be the (probably) burnt coffees at the route’s petrol stations.

Instead, you can enjoy a host of treats along this 725-kilometre route. Like the spoils of the McLaren Vale wine region, where great wine, exceptional food, and impressive art are so good you may consider moving there. Hurried driving would also see you miss the quirky attractions at Victor Harbor, such as swimming with the speedy southern bluefin tuna and taking a horse-drawn cart to see little penguins and seals.

Towards Melbourne, discover the old bluestone homes at Port Fairy, watch whales passing (May to September) at Warrnambool, and beach town-hop along the iconic Great Ocean Road.

Head Outback to Uluru via Adelaide, Melbourne, or Sydney

To get off-the-beaten track in Australia, go inland. It won’t make it any less enticing for the adventurous road-tripper, quite the opposite! Because Outback Australia offers different kinds of charms.

Choose your own Outback adventure when you journey from Adelaide to Uluru. Popular stops include the gorgeous Clare Valley vineyards, the ochre-hued Flinders Ranges, and underground homes at Coober Pedy. Of course, the pinnacle of this road trip is the mesmerising Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. While seemingly a giant red monolith, Uluru has an undeniable draw that few can deny.

To return a different route, consider dropping your Star RV off at our Melbourne or Sydney branches. Highlights on the Melbourne route include the Wadlata Outback Centre in Port Augusta, the ‘Food Bowl of Australia’, Mildura, and the gold mining town of Bendigo.

For Sydney, stop by Broken Hill, made famous by the movie Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and explore the unique attractions in Dubbo. Both add unexpected fun to your Outback adventure.

Road trip the best of far north Queensland

The rustle of leaves under the canopy of the ancient rainforest, the serenity along the near-empty stretches of gorgeous coastline, and the verdant farmlands and artisanal creators in the hinterland await in Far North Queensland. It’s a destination that demands your attention, in turn, offering peace, rejuvenation, and a sense of well-being.

Starting your journey in Cairns, your biggest concern on a road trip here is which incredible natural wonder to visit first. The ancient UNESCO World Heritage Daintree Rainforest is a Far North Queensland must-do; to walk amid the centuries-old flora and fauna is enthralling. Nearby, Cape Tribulation is an idyllic spot where the ocean meets the rainforest, and heading south, vast stretches of white-sand beaches and inviting azure waters beckon.

The real allure of a trip this far north? The Great Barrier Reef, of course! Sail, swim, snorkel, paddle, kayak, and dive the reef to discover why it draws visitors from around the world.

Heading inland with your Cairns motorhome hire, the Atherton Tablelands is perfect for foodies and nature lovers alike. The craft produce, leafy vineyards, and Kuranda’s bohemian vibes make fascinating road trip stops.

Far North Queensland offers incredible Indigenous experiences, including Dreamtime walks at Mosman Gorge and the inspired Dreamtime Dive Great Barrier Reef boat tour.

Tour Australia’s most famous road trip from Cairns to Sydney

Ready for a big adventure? The kind that sets the soul soaring and reveals some of the country's most iconic sights? Then consider journeying from Cairns to Sydney; it’s the ultimate Australian road trip.

While you can drive Cairns to Sydney (or vice versa) in around 10 days, we recommend longer if time permits. Longer adventures ensure you don’t miss the jaw-dropping beauty of the beaches, ancient national parks, and native wildlife spotting. The more time on the road, the more you can relish those unhurried, authentic moments that make travelling around Australia in a motorhome so special.

From kangaroos hopping around your Polaris 6 at dawn at Cape Hillsborough to whale watching (July to November) at Hervey Bay to discovering why Byron Bay is still such an on-trend destination, it’s all possible when you travel one of Australia’s most legendary road trip routes.

See the best of Queensland from Cairns to Brisbane

For a shorter sojourn, consider road-tripping solely in Queensland. There's so much to see and do between our Cairns and Brisbane motorhome hire branches.

After touring the joys of Far North Queensland, travel south to uncover the frequent highlights along this well-driven route. They include the fun atmosphere at Airlie Beach - the entry point to the Whitsundays - plus, stopping to savour the sleepy vibes of Agnes Beach and 1770.

Noosa and Fraser Island are highly recommended, as well as detouring to the stunning Glass House Mountains on your drive into Brisbane. The peaks, hikes, wildlife, and communities here are sure to impress.

Sun, surf, and seek adventures on the Gold Coast

Queensland’s iconic Gold Coast is aptly named, thanks to its golden-sand beaches, happy-go-lucky attractions, and the locals’ sunny disposition. It’s a place to soak up the rays, switch your vibes, and say yes to adventures. Only an hour from Brisbane, it’s easy to ‘stay golden’ when you road trip around the Gold Coast.

While you may know the Gold Coast for having plenty of man-made adventures—there are six theme parks and countless glitzy attractions, after all—there are plenty of natural ones to entice, too. Out in nature is where the true Gold Coast shines.

Head inland to places like Springbrook, Lamington, and Tamborine National Parks, where a range of hikes, authentic wildlife encounters, and quaint eateries entice. Of course, there’s the coast to explore, too.

Burleigh Heads appeals as you can swim, surf, stroll through Burleigh Heads National Park, then head to James Street for a feast. Currumbin is another winner. Dip in the calm creek, make new friends at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, and grab a bite where the kangaroos hang out at the Currumbin Eco Village.

The best road trip routes in Western Australia

No travel expert or blog can truly prepare you for how enchanting Western Australia is. Collect your Star RV motorhome hire in Perth to access surreal terrain, outlandish-looking monuments, and out-of-this-world wildlife. The only challenge? Deciding which direction to go!

For landmarks and attractions that almost no one in the world ever sees drive north. It’s here that you encounter wonders like the friendly dolphins at Monkey Mia, the migrating whale sharks at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, and the incredible orange-and-black striped domes of the Bungle Bungles at Purnululu National Park.

South of Western Australia’s capital, a less remote, more decadent adventure awaits with an abundance of treats across the Margaret River region. This includes artisanal goodies and vineyard feasts using local produce so fresh it’s like you picked it yourself. There’s also the legendary Busselton Jetty, culturally significant Ngilgi caves, and the famed Cape to Cape Walk Track.

While we’ve barely scratched the surface for potential Australian road trips – it's so vast – we've given you enough teasers to taste the freedom you’ll gain when you travel in comfort and style with us and AirAsia X.
