Six-day family road trip itinerary: exploring QLD and NSW

Road trip Queensland and New South Wales with our six-day family-friendly itinerary.

By Erin Bacchi

Recently, my family embarked on a road trip around South East QLD and Northern NSW. We travelled in a Star RV motorhome, choosing the Polaris 6 model, which sleeps six people. Although there were only four of us, this was the best option for our boys (aged 2 and 5) to fit in car seats and travel with a little extra space and comfort.

Our family has a range of food sensitivities, so having our kitchen with us everywhere we went was ideal. I prepped meals before we left and had most of our dinners sorted, which also meant we saved money by not eating out every night.

If you’ve been thinking about taking your family on a motorhome adventure, I highly recommend it! Here’s where we went:

Day 1: Sunshine Coast to Girraween

We picked up our Star RV from their Brisbane branch and got everything packed up before hitting the road. The drive from the Sunshine Coast to Girraween took us about four hours, and the RV made the journey smooth and comfortable for everyone, especially the kids. It was very convenient having a fully stocked fridge on hand when we needed to pull over for a snack break (or three).

Our first stop was Mountain View Wines, a Hipcamp located just south of Stanthorpe. It’s a charming vineyard where you can enjoy a wine tasting for $10, or for free if you buy a bottle of wine afterwards. While Bryn and I relaxed with our wine tasting, the kids were happily entertained by the sandpit, play area, and friendly chickens and resident dogs. It was the perfect way to unwind and start our trip on a high note.

Day 2: Girraween National Park to Morrow

The next morning, we drove a short 20 minutes to Girraween National Park. We tackled the Granite Arch Circuit and made our way to the base of The Pyramid. The base is reachable after climbing about 400 stairs. Bryn continued to the summit for the amazing views, while the boys and I enjoyed a picnic at the base. You can assess whether your family will make it to the summit once you start the scramble, then decide whether to continue up or kick back and enjoy the views from the base.

On our way out, we stopped by Wisteria Cottage Heavenly Chocolate. The sweet treats were a delightful way to end our hike, keeping us fuelled for the road ahead.

We then drove to The Peach Farm, a Hipcamp in Mororo, just inland from Yamba. This place was a hit with the kids—farm animals everywhere, spacious campsites, and even bathtubs to relax in. The pizza oven and quirky camp kitchen added to the charm, and the animals kept our little ones entertained.

Day 3: Mororo to Lennox Head

We woke up at The Peach Farm, enjoyed a session at the playground, and then whipped up some pancakes in our Star RV. The morning highlight was joining the farm animal feeding tour at 8 am—a hands-on experience that was a hit with the whole family.

We then drove for an hour from Mororo to Lennox Head and checked into Reflections Holiday Park, where we had a lovely lakeside site. It was conveniently located within walking distance of the beach and just a 10-minute stroll to town. We grabbed some fish and chips for dinner, let the kids play at the local playground, and enjoyed a relaxing evening by the lake.

Day 4: Lennox Head to Hosanna Farmstay

On day four, we woke early, took a dip at the beach, and strolled along the Lennox Head esplanade before driving the scenic coastal route via Byron Bay and heading up to the Byron Bay Lighthouse. Byron Bay is known for its vibrant café culture, making it a great spot for a bite to eat if you’re passing through.

We continued for another 40 minutes to reach Hosanna Farmstay. This place has a true summer camp vibe, with activities like feeding farm animals, treasure hunts, and a waterslide that ends in a dam. You can float around in rubber tubes or take a kayak for a spin. There’s also a playground, an onsite café, and a gift shop. It was a fun and relaxing stop with plenty for the kids to do.

Day 5: Hosanna Farmstay to Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park

After a morning coffee from the farm’s café and more animal feeding at Hosanna, we packed up and drove an hour to Movie World. We enjoyed a few hours of thrills before heading to the Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park, just 3 minutes away.

Our premium turfed campsite at the Big4 was fantastic—spacious, with plenty of room for the kids to play. It felt like having our own backyard right outside the RV.

Day 6: Enjoying Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park

The Big4 Gold Coast is one of the top-rated holiday parks for families in Queensland, so we decided to stay for the day and make the most of the park’s amenities. The kids had a blast with the onsite waterslides, playground, games room, pedal bikes, and jumping pillow. There’s also an onsite café serving coffee, snacks, lunch, and dinner. It was great to relax and let the kids enjoy all the fun activities.

Day 7: Heading Home

On our final day, we packed up the RV, headed home, unpacked, and then returned the motorhome to Star RV. The trip was an amazing experience, and we created so many memories that we’ll cherish forever.
