Demi Gavin: Wander Slower

A couple’s loop around Tasmania reawakens their sense of wonder, with wild hikes, epic views, and a deep reconnection to nature’s healing power.

Tasmania is a true paradise for nature lovers. Drawn in by its raw wilderness and vast, breathtaking landscapes, my partner and I set off on a road trip across the island. We experienced countless ‘pinch me’ moments along the way and crossed off some long-held bucket list dreams. I pictured Tasmania as a incredible place to begin with, however experiencing it for myself it is now one of my favourite places in Australia. It feels like a breath of fresh air, a place where your mind runs wild. It was nothing short of unforgettable.

We decided to do an entire loop of Tasmania, starting in Melbourne, then venturing down to Hobart as our first Tasmania stop. We travelled along the wild west coast and then around the east coast. Doing this meant we were able to get a good feel for Tasmania in it’s entirety and we really felt the Tassie effect.

Our favourite experience was absolutely our hike up Mount Amos in Freycinet National Park. We started early to catch the sunrise. The hike is not for the faint-hearted, it has plenty of scrambling and rock bouldering. Because of the difficulty, the reward of getting to the top (and being the first for the day!) was off the charts. The sweeping views of Freycinet are otherworldly and absolutely an incredible experience.

When you’re outside on an adventure, worries fade away and you become more in tune with yourself. Nature heals all and it makes you challenge every single thought about life. Overall, the trip was a breath of fresh air. Our road trip made us feel whole, excited and gave us a little bit of an adrenaline rush here and there which we loved!
