Evan: The Perfect One Week Southwest Road Trip
A breath of fresh air to escape the city, get into the forest, and explore the coastline
When the weather forecast promised a week of clear skies, I knew it was going to be a gorgeous week down south. I have family down there that I haven't seen in a while, so I grabbed my partner and off we went!
As soon as I hit the road, I always have a feeling of freedom over me, the great unknown of what is to come. It is a breath of fresh air to escape the city and get into the forest and along the coastline.
I spent a lot of time in Southwest region of Western Australia as a kid growing up, so I am very familiar with the area. Each time I return, I find a new beach and snap a new favourite photo. I love it a little bit more every time I go back.
Our journey began in Perth. From there we ventured to Bunbury and Busselton, where we soaked up the charm of coastal towns. The next day we visited Boranup, then continued on to Margaret River.
If I had to pick one standout moment, it would be rocking up at Redgate Beach in Margaret River. It’s a place I've visited many times before, but I’ve never seen perfect conditions like this. Zero wind, clear blue sky and a smooth rolling wave coming off the point. It was the perfect time to fly my drone and capture the kind of shots that make you feel like you’re seeing the world anew.
On the fifth day of our trip, we continued along the coast and stopped in Pemberton and Walpole. The next day, we kept driving to Denmark and Albany before making our way back to Perth.
This trip through my hometown reminded me of how much there is to explore right on our doorstep. I returned feeling grateful, adventurous, refreshed and in awe. It was an overall revitalising feeling by the end of it all!
